About

CAMBRIA is a program to build technical skills for AI safety work, based on the ARENA curriculum and hosted by CBAI.

The curriculum will cover ML basics, Transformers, mechanistic interpretability, LLM evaluations, and alignment science, with a capstone project at the end. Prerequisites are familiarity with Python and comfort with multivariable calculus and linear algebra. (More information about prerequisites here.)

What's provided

  • Housing and meals

  • 24/7 office access in Cambridge

  • Dedicated teaching assistants

Responses to "How likely are you to recommend this program to someone in a similar position to where you were before?"

“The people were amazing, and I accomplished what I set out to do, which was to just Get Good.”

“I knew I was interested in the field, but doing CAMBRIA is what actually got me to build skills, develop research taste, and collaborate with others in AI safety. Before CAMBRIA I felt like an outsider to AI safety, whereas now I feel like I belong in it.”

August cohort

“Although I have done research before, it was never in AI safety, and thus I always thought I wasn't ready. Now I feel not only ready, but also excited to do research in the field and see its impact on the world.”

August cohort

“I think this is basically as good a bang for your buck you can get for early-career / people newish to the space.”

July cohort

“CAMBRIA is my most meaningful experience this summer, and has made me sure that I want to explore more of AI safety and work in this field in the future.”

Who should apply?

We're excited about a wide range of applicants: software engineers considering a career change, students in math or physics looking to pick up ML skills, aspiring policy professionals or fieldbuilders who want to be able to engage with technical work, and more. If you're interested in working to address the risks posed by powerful AI systems and feel that hands-on experience with machine learning is what's holding you back, we encourage you to apply!

Who shouldn’t apply?

If you're interested in the program and considering a career in AI safety, err on the side of applying, even if you might fall into one of these categories! However, in the interest of transparency, applications with these characteristics are less likely to be extended offers to participate:

• A long track record of ML and/or AI safety research: the program's goal is primarily to bring new researchers into the field, so existing researchers are deprioritized.
• Limited interest in AI safety
• Prior participation in a similar program, such as ARENA, ARBOx, MLAB, TARA, etc.

If you're worried you might be over-qualified for CAMBRIA participation, you may be a fantastic TA: consider applying!

Can I apply from outside the US?

Yes! International participants are welcome, and US work authorization is not required. If accepted, you are responsible for obtaining authorization to enter the US during the program. CBAI cannot directly support or sponsor a visa application, but we can provide you with a letter of invitation indicating your acceptance to the program.

US work authorization is required for TAs.

What meals are provided during the program?

Lunch and dinner are provided every weekday during the program. Meals are sourced from local restaurants through Forkable.

What housing is provided during the program?

Participants will be provided housing in a short-term rental (e.g. through Airbnb) or a hotel. Each participant will have their own room, and units will be shared among 2-5 CAMBRIA participants. Units are typically within a 35-minute trip to the office by walking or public transit.

Housing units will be available starting on the Saturday afternoon before the program begins, and will remain available until the Sunday afternoon following the program's conclusion. (In January, this means housing will be available January 2-24.)

Can I do a full-time job or school at the same time as CAMBRIA?

No. Participation in CAMBRIA requires eight hours of dedicated focus per day (occasionally more). Sporadic calls or meetings can be accommodated, but you should not expect to be able to take regular calls during the workday.

Note that if you are applying from outside the US, individuals entering the country via ESTA or B-1/B-2 may not work or perform services for pay during their stay.

What if I have conflicts during the program dates?

We strongly prioritize candidates who can commit to attending all 15 days of the program. However, we recognize that many participants have other commitments. As a rule of thumb, we will typically be ok with a participant missing one day, and we will typically not accept a participant who plans to miss more than three days.

Can I participate remotely?

No: CAMBRIA is a full-time, in-person program in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Participants are expected to be in Cambridge for the duration of the program.

Will CBAI pay for my travel costs?

In most cases, CBAI is able to reimburse 100% of travel costs. We commit to reimbursing up to $750 per participant, and can cover additional costs on a case-by-case basis. We do not want finances to present a barrier to anyone's participation in CAMBRIA.
