We're hiring!

Come help us increase the number of talented researchers working to mitigate risks from artificial intelligence.

Thank you for your interest in working with the Cambridge Boston Alignment Initiative (CBAI)! We’re looking for excellent people to help us build programs for top students at Harvard, MIT, and other universities to accelerate them on their path to impact in AI alignment and related fields. All our positions are in-person, based in our offices near Harvard and MIT. You’d work closely with CBAI co-founders Kuhan Jeyapragasan and Trevor Levin, as well as a larger network of highly motivated and talented students at Harvard and MIT.

If this sounds exciting to you, we encourage you to apply, even if you don’t have all of the characteristics listed below.

CBAI’s work includes supporting programs like those run by the Harvard AI Safety Team (HAIST) and the MIT AI Alignment group (MAIA), such as AI Safety Intro Fellowships, member meetings (e.g. MAIA’s Science of Deep Learning reading group), professor talks and public events, governance/strategy fellowships through both groups, and jointly organized retreats. CBAI also runs upskilling programs and research fellowships over winter and summer breaks.

Our programs have reached some of the most technically impressive students at both schools, as well as highly promising students and early-career individuals from the broader AI safety ecosystem. Our work is evolving rapidly as the field develops and the groups grow, which offers both challenges and exciting opportunities. With your help, we expect to be able to make better strategic decisions, execute better programs, and accelerate more top students into high-impact work in AI safety. For more about HAIST and MAIA, see our update post.

Operations Director

Full time, Cambridge MA

Apply here.

CBAI is looking for a head of operations to oversee high-level execution for CBAI’s programs. This position involves a broad spectrum of responsibilities, requiring versatility and the capacity to handle a wide range of tasks. Substantial responsibilities would include managing CBAI’s financial and employment records, interfacing with vendors, contractors, and suppliers, and ensuring smooth operations of programming and offices for AI safety at Harvard, MIT and beyond (e.g. ML bootcamps, AI governance research workshops). Additionally, you would work closely with the leaders of the student groups at Harvard and MIT, and with the directors of CBAI, in developing and executing any new programming or plans for the organization.

This position would be a full-time role, and may involve working some evenings or less-predictable hours depending on event schedules. Depending on experience, we’d expect to pay between $40 and $60 per hour (or an equivalent non-hourly salary).

Operations Associate (MIT AI Alignment)

Part time, Cambridge MA

Apply here.

The MIT AI Alignment group (MAIA) would significantly benefit from more operational capacity to run more, better, and more flexible programs and events; keep the office operating smoothly; and build back-end systems that make it easier to run the organization in the medium term. This position would involve preparing for events, keeping our MIT campus office stocked and functional, proactively identifying and addressing issues that arise, and developing and maintaining task management and information storage systems.

This position would be a part-time role (about 15 hours/week) and involve working some evenings, weekends, or less predictable hours. Depending on experience, we’d expect to pay between $35 and $45 per hour.

For each of these roles, we think a good fit would have most of these characteristics:

  • Motivated by reducing catastrophic risks from AI

  • At least moderately knowledgeable about AI risk, including its technical dimensions

  • Experienced in running outreach/field-building/community-building programs, especially in AI safety or related work (e.g., effective altruism groups), ideally with a demonstrated record of success

  • Organized, i.e., not dropping balls, communicating when you need help, delegating, etc.

  • Generally responsive and able to maintain frequent communication, including during non-work hours

  • Comfort working on “startup-y” close teams with evolving responsibilities

  • Personable and comfortable giving and receiving honest and constructive feedback

Feel free to reach out with any questions!
